Hello, I have a fortiGate 200D, V5.4.0, build 1011 which am finding to miss certain functionalities. Kindly advise on better version i need to upgrade to, how to do it and the impact involved

You device can run 5.6.X and 6.0X, 6.2 is not supported on 200D. All depends what features you use, or plan to use. Latest SSL VPN issue forced people to upgrade their Fortigates. First you need to read "Release Notes" for one of the recent versions. It can be 5.6.9 or 6.0.5. Check if there is something what doesn't work and you use it. Do backup, check the upgrade path and read some manuals, like this one:
