Connecting to VPN

A useful first step is to check whether the VPN client can reach the VPN gateway and whether the timeout occurs before authentication, during connection establishment, or after the VPN appears to connect.

You could also check the VPN client's connection logs for any error messages around the time of the failure. These can help distinguish a gateway connectivity issue from an authentication or tunnel negotiation problem.

If you're using FortiClient, the troubleshooting steps may differ depending on whether the connection is SSL-VPN or IPsec VPN.
