The SharePoint agent can be installed on a company's own SharePoint server - whether that is an on-premise box, or hosted on AWS, Azure etc.  The SharePoint agent cannot be used with SharePoint Online, i.e. when Microsoft host the SharePoint deployment and offer it as SaaS.

The SharePoint agent:

• Captures file uploads and downloads to and from SharePoint
• Records the user as being the user authenticated with SharePoint and performing the upload or download
• A single SharePoint agent on the SharePoint server tracks all uploads and downloads, regardless of what client device is being used, for example a VDI, a work laptop or an iPad.
