Description

This article describes the steps to enable the web browser plugin for HTTPS web filtering in FortiClient EMS. Enabling this plugin improves the detection and enforcement of Web Filter rules on HTTPS sites.

Scope

FortiClient EMS, Web rating.

Solution

FortiClient EMS installs the web browser plugin only for Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Microsoft Edge on Windows platforms.

To enable the web browser plugin:

  1. Navigate to EMS -> Endpoint Profile -> Web Filter.
  2. Edit the selected profile.
  3. Select Enable Web Browser Plugin for HTTPS Web Filtering on FortiClient.

By GPO: with (IncognitoModeAvailability value:1:(

  • Chrome: Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Google\Chrome.
  • Edge: Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Edge.
  • Firefox: Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Mozilla\Firefox.

Note

In the latest EMS versions, there is a new option called 'Enforce WF plugin permission in private browsing' in the profile configuration:

This option forces users to enable 'Allow in Private/Incognito' for the WF plugin in Chrome/Edge/Firefox browsers. It is recommended to enable this option to guarantee the correct inspection and categorization of sites.

Users must manually enable the 'Allow in Private/Incognito' option on the browser's extension settings. Due to the different browser security policies, FortiClient cannot automatically enable this option in private mode.
