Hi,
and welcome to the Forums!
You' re right, there is no cross-reference from model to firmware version. Mainly because the firmware usually supports all current models and a lot of older ones. If you own one of the models that are already EOL' d then it' s not easy to find the latest available version.
For the 80C which still is young and fresh, there are 3 branches:
3.0MR7, lastest patch 10 = build 754
and
4.0MR1 (a.k.a. 4.1), latest patch 9 = build 213
and
4.0MR2, latest patch 3 = build 303
(yes, I know, there is a 4.00 firmware as well..this is outdated by 4.1).
Version 4 brought a lot of nice useable features (DLP, App Control, WAN Optimization and more) that v3 didn' t have, so I' d go with at least v4.1.
It' s not (only) that 4.1 is older; it still has the green skin and the menus are placed where you' d expect them to be coming from v3.00. With 4.2, Fortinet changed the GUI a lot, sporting a silverish skin and different menus. Some features have been changed too, and some added.
You' ll find all of this in the Release Notes with every published firmware which I seriously recommend to read before upgrading.
As for firmware notification:
if you log in into support.fortinet.com, and click Downloads/Firmware Images, on that page you' ll find instructions how to get onto their RSS feed.
HTH.
