HA Upgrade

We’ll be upgrading two FortiGates configured in Active-Passive HA. Is it possible to have one FortiGate running on the upgraded version for testing while keeping the other on the previous version? Or is it necessary to upgrade both FortiGates to the same FortiOS version for HA to function properly? This is a production environment, so I'd like to know if I can upgrade one FortiGate first to test the stability of the upgrade and HA with the FortiGate running on the original version.

i literally just updated our 2 460 HA from 10.1.8 to 10.1.10-h2, I first suspend the active FW, verify that 2nd FW is up and working, update the suspended FW, reboot and once HA between the two is fully up, failover to the first FW again, then update the 2nd FW

Not sure about what's "460" but there is no FortiOS 10.x.x. The current latest is 7.6.x.
Also not sure what you mean by "suspended". Did you mean "halt" it by "exe shutdown"? Or, you meant "isolating it" but shutting down all interfaces into that unit on the opposite side (like a switch, and the other side of HA cable)?
