Fried 61E

Hello:

I recently lost power to my FG-61E and it did not "come back up". The console scrolls the following error:

ata1: exception Emask 0x10 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x41c0000 action 0xe frozen
ata1: irq_stat 0x00000040, connection status changed

I performed a factory reset to no avail. Is my emmc fried? If so, should I even keep the unit?

EMMC is the flash drive, and if it was fried I don't think you would get that far in the boot. But it does seem like FGT lost the harddisk (122 Gb) with the reasons may be many - harddisk failure, FGT disk controller (ATA?) failure. Anyway, if you have Forticare - ticket and most probably RMA would be in line. If you don't - worth detaching the aforementioned harddisk, and attaching it somewhere else to know if its him who failed or FGT (not that it would help in either case any further).

Hi RComb,

If you need to resolve this issue as soon as possible, I recommend contacting Fortinet TAC.  I think the issue may be related to hardware or a cable connection between components. Please try powering off the device, wait for about 30 seconds, and then power it back on. In addition, I will also discuss this with our engineering team. Thank you

Regards

Bill

Thank you, Bill. I have performed the steps you have suggested, however, I am still receiving the error. I suspect that the SSD drive has failed.

Thank you and good point. If the EMMC had failed, it would not boot at all. I removed the SSD and re-seated it,  however, I am still receiving the error. I suspect that the SSD drive has failed. I will attempt to replace it and see if that resolves the issue.

On the 61E data sheet, it mentions the LiteOn 128Gb M.2 2280 SSD. Do you know: is that the only compatible or recommended M.2 SSD for use with the 61E? Or, am I able to use a SanDisk 128G M.2 2280 SSD? Or even a 256G Samsung 2280 M.2?

Thank you, again

Since that reply, instead of trying the "failed" SSD in another system, I found an SK Hynix 2280 128G SSD in-house and swapped it with the failed LiteOn SSD drive. Apparently, it worked, as the FortiOS found the drive, reformatted it and then the 61E rebooted to the login prompt with no errors. I'll locate my config copy and try to get her back online to see if that fully fixed the issue.

Thanks very much for the assist.
