outbandwidth, inbandwidth settings per port

config system interface edit <interface_name> set outbandwidth <rate_int> next end customer has 1Mbps=1000kbps (or Kbps), correct me if I am wrong. wan1 is external internel is internal network what is best practice for setting in and outbandwidth settings for wan1 and internal, if internal requires any settings? thanks.

If you want to limit the amount of incoming traffic the FGT has to process then you would employ a traffic shaper on WAN1. As this affects traffic very early on it' s a way to save ressources. If you want to limit (user groups' ) traffic from internal to the internet then you' d install a traffic shaper on the internal interface. For the traffic shaper to work properly you should specify the maximum transfer speed which can be obtained via this interface. Usually you only have traffic shaper(s) on the internal OR WAN interface so you specify inbandwidth/outbandwidth only on one interface. For all FortiOS versions before 4.3 (v4.00 MR3) the number is given in KiloBytes per second. For 4.3 it' s in KiloBits per second. As 1 byte = 8 bits, and 1 Mega=2^20=1024*1024, 1 Kilo=2^10=1024, a 1Mbps line allows for 128 KBps (=1024/8).
