RADIUS without FortiGate?

Good Day,

Just got a few FortiAP units (FP221C) with OS FP221C-v5.4 build 0327

Trying to set them up to authenticate clients using our RADIUS server, however I can't seem to get it working.

Clients are Windows 10 Pro systems, RADIUS provided by Windows 2012 R2 NPS.

Is there a document somewhere that explains this setup?

Everything I've been able to find so far only talks about how to do it using some version of the FortiGate firewall, which I don't have at the moment.

I think the documentation you're looking for is the FortiWiFi and FortiAP Configuration Guide, http://docs.fortinet.com/d/fortigate-fortiwifi-and-fortiap-configuration-guide-54.

Per page 37, using WPA2-Enterprise Security Mode allows specifying a RADIUS Server under Authentication.  Page 41 refers to "Configuring the FortiGate unit to Access the RADIUS Server", but hopefully similar steps work for a FortiAP unit.
