Hi all :) I got stuck to an issue trying to connect a Huawei E5776 4G modem to a 60D USB port. I have followed several tutorials here and there but I keep being stuck at the same point whatever settings I am trying to configure. Fist of all, modem is a Huawei E5776. It got detected as a Huawei - E353 in the WebUI but I am not sure it matters since it is recognized as a E5776 in the CLI. Plus, if I try to create a "New 3G Modem Custom Settings" with info gathered from "fnsysctl cat /proc/bus/usb/devices" command, it will just create a new modem with the right name but the same settings (vendor_id & product_id, string_init is the part I am not sure of thought). Anyhow, I got stuck with both following error messages. When I do a config sys modem query, it seems almost fine except for "active profile (AT&V)" which is either followed by ERROR or by RSSI18 (or by RSSI with another number):
FGT60D... # diagnose sys modem query USB status: Connected manufacturer: huawei model: E5776 IMEI number: 86.... SIM state: Valid service status: Valid Service signal level: 3/4 network name: 20801 network type: E-UTRAN location area code: CAE1 active profile(AT&V): ERROR
Does someone have any idea what could be wrong at this step ? And when I try to run a debug app modemd command, I got the following error no matter what is configured (I am not getting any different behavior that could put me on a lead :/) chat: expect (OK) chat: ^M chat: ^M chat: OK chat: -- got it chat: send (ats7=30^M) chat: timeout set to 30 seconds chat: expect (OK) chat: ^M chat: ^M chat: OK chat: -- got it chat: send (AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","www.orange.fr"^M) chat: expect (OK) chat: ^M chat: ^M chat: OK chat: -- got it chat: send (atdt*99#^M) chat: expect (CONNECT) chat: ^M chat: ^M chat: ERROR chat: -- failed chat: Failed (ERROR) modemd: run_state_machine state 2(dialing) modemd: Unable to connect to remote server "*99#" modemd: modem state changed: 2(dialing) -> 4(hangingup) modemd: modem_ppp_stop:477 primary modemd: redails:28 isp:0 dev:/dev/ttyusb0 tel:*99# modemd: run_state_machine state 4(hangingup) modemd: modem state changed: 4(hangingup) -> 0(uninit)
Thanks in advance for any piece of advice :)
Best regards,
Alexis

Did you try to ensure the modem work with a PC first? This will validate data-service is enabled and works and the correct APN setting. Also we are assuming no pin lock?
Lastly, what does your ATI cmd show for modem query?

Hi emnoc, thanks for the help :)
Yes it's working fine with my PC and device is set to not require pin.
Here's what comes out of ATI cmd :
FGT60D... # diagnose sys modem cmd ati ^RSSI:14 Manufacturer: huawei Model: E5776 Revision: 21.202.17.00.1062 IMEI: 86... +GCAP: +CGSM,+DS,+ES OK
Best regards,
So on the dial string are you sure it's *99# and not *99****1# ? If you have the means to check using a unix host or terminal you can run thru all the AT cmd initialization commands and strings before trying on the fortigate, but it might be your dialed-string digits since your ppp-chat halts after the dialing.

Hi emnoc,
Thanks for the reply. Yes, I have tried both dial strings already, but still got stuck with the same error. I have tried to run it under a Unix OS in order to have better results or logs as advised but did not succeed unfortunately : /
Problem might come from the fact that device is not officially supported by FortiGate. Besides that, it's an Huawei E5776 4G modem but it also comes along with an Orange (FR operator) firmware and I am not sure it would allows the same in terms of commands and all so...
I have put it on hold for now... I will try with a supported one if I get a chance to.
Thanks for the help thought :)
