Description
This article provides an explanation for the error message 'No valid upgrade path from FortiOS v7.0.17' that shows if attempting to upgrade from v7.0.17 to v7.2.10.
Scope
FortiGate.
Solution
At time of release, there was no supported upgrade path from v7.0.17 to 7.2.10 and earlier v7.2.x versions. This is expected. Upgrade from v7.0.17 to v7.2.11 is now supported as v7.2.11 is already available.
Before the v7.2.11 release, the following error message is expected if attempting to upgrade from 7.0.17 to the higher version: 'No valid upgrade path from FortiOS 7.0.17'.
This message is expected, since v7.0.17 was released in January 2025, while v7.2.10 was released September 2024.
If urgently required to upgrade from v7.0.17 to v7.2.10 and the device was running successfully on earlier firmware, consider booting from backup partition and upgrade from the earlier firmware/configuration following upgrade path. Note booting from backup partition restores the previous configuration, so any configuration changes made on v7.0.17 will be lost. While running v7.0.16 or earlier version, it is critical to keep aware of known vulnerability CVE-2024-55591 and not leave HTTP/HTTPS administrator access exposed on untrusted networks such as the public internet.
While it is not a supported option nor recommended, downgrade to an earlier v7.0 version or manual 'upgrade' to v7.2.10 is possible using manual File Upload if no other options exist. If performing this it is strongly recommended to have local serial console access available, since the device may have stability issues or fail to boot in a worst case.
