Description This article describes a situation where Fabric devices (FortiSwitch in this example) may show the error 'Upgrade Failed' or 'Upgrade Incomplete' in the FortiGate under GUI -> System -> Firmware & Registration -> Fabric Devices.
Scope FortiGate, FortiSwitch.
Solution

A new feature Fabric Upgrade is introduced in newer firmware, this feature allows to upgrade of all the supported devices including FortiGate, FortiAP, FortiExtender, and FortiSwitch at once. It also allows to schedule the upgrade to be pushed to a specific date and time: Upgrading all devices

In this example, FortiGate and FortiSwitch are upgraded successfully to v7.6.1 from the FortiGate GUI.  Here, the upgrade can be completed successfully from: FortiGate GUI -> WiFi & Switch Controller -> Manage FortiSwitches -> Edit Managed FortiSwitch -> Firmware -> Upgrade -> Upload the FortiSwitch Image.

The FortiSwitch upgrade process will take some time and it can be tracked in a small popup shown in the following screenshot.

Even after the successful upgrade, the following errors show up under FortiGate GUI -> System -> Firmware & Registration -> Fabric Devices.

FortiGate Error:
'Upgrade Incomplete'.
FortiSwitch Error: 'Upgrade Failed'.

These errors are shown because the devices are stuck on 'Fabric Upgrade'. This can be checked using CLI with command 'execute federated-upgrade status' where it will show the status failed.

To fix this issue, select the 'Dismiss Fabric upgrade' from GUI as shown above. From CLI it could be cancelled with a command 'execute federated-upgrade cancel'.

Once Fabric Upgrade is cancelled the normal upgrade could be done either with normal upgrade option or Fabric upgrade option without any issues.

Note:
These errors can be seen for any other Fabric devices.
