Description This article discusses the error Failed to send activation code.
Scope FortiGate, FortiToken.
Solution

FortiToken has 3 main statuses:

  1. Available: The Token is activated and can be assigned to the user.
  2. Assigned: The Token is assigned to the user, and the user has activated the Token
  3. Pending: The Token is assigned to the user but the user has not yet activated the code.

Sometimes, users get the following error when sending an activation code via email:

If assigning an available status, FortiToken Mobile shows the error "Failed to send activation code," and the FortiToken Mobile is not trial [licensed], use the command below to refresh it instead of deleting it.

Before running the command below remove the token from user if already assigned:

exec fortitoken-mobile renew <fortitokenmobile serialnumber>

example :

exec fortitoken-mobile renew FTKMOBXXXXXXXXX9

Command to rest FortiToken Hard tokens or TAC support could also reset the token status:

exec fortitoken activate <serial-number>

example :

exec fortitoken activate FTK20XXXX0000000

The activation code cannot be sent for already activated Tokens. If the token is provisioned and the current state is 'Pending', it is possible to resend the Token activation code.

Meanwhile, if the Token has already been activated, and the status is 'Assigned', it will not be possible to resend the activation code.

For an alternative option, disable Two-factor Authentication for the user(s) in question, and apply the changes.

Then, enable Two-factor Authentication and reassign the right token. Enter the email address and select 'send activation code' to test.
