Description

This article will demonstrate how to update the BIOS version on FortiSwitch OS.

Scope

FortiSwitch.

Solution

Note that If there is a compelling reason to perform an upgrade, it should only be performed following the advice of and under close supervision from an experienced TAC technician. BIOS upgrading for a 'lack of feature' or for 'updating to a newer version' is not recommended or supported. BIOS images are not publicly available, cannot be downloaded, and can only be provided by tech support from developers.

This article example will use the TFPTPD application to install the BIOS firmware with TFPT. Download it from this Bitbucket page.

  • Download the BIOS firmware provided by the TAC engineer. Save the file to a known path, preferably 'c:\New_Folder_Name'.
  • Make sure the TFTPD software is running, and make sure to select the right directory and interface to monitor.
  • Make sure the local Windows firewall has UDP port 69 inbound allowed.

On the FortiSwitch, run the following commands after the FortiSwitch is booted up and running the current FortiSwitch OS. Any FortiSwitch OS version should be fine.

exec restore bios tftp <bios file name.bin> <tftp server address>

Note: Make sure to include the extension of the file, .bin.

Example:

exec restore bios tftp FS1E48T4xxxxxxx.bin 10.10.10.1

  • Press Enter to continue. If all is good, the file will be downloaded and a prompt will appear to press 'Y' to continue.
  • The installation takes approximately 10 minutes on average. Reboot the FortiSwitch after completing it.
