Description

This article describes how to diagnose USB Stick detection.

Scope

FortiGate.

Solution

If the USB Stick is not inserted, then the USB operation option will appear as grayed out in the GUI. In the following example backup a system configuration file without the USB Stick inserted will be shown as an unavailable option on the GUI, at the following location:

Before v4.0MR2: System -> Maintenance.
Since v4.0MR2: System -> Dashboard -> System Configuration -> Backup.

Once physically inserted in the system, the 'USB Disk' option will become available and the system configuration of the FortiGate will be available for backup via the USB Stick. This GUI behavior is valid for all other 'USB Disk' operations.
The following are the CLI commands:

execute usb-disk list
execute usb-device list

If the USB Stick remains undetected by FortiOS despite its physical insertion in a USB port, check whether the USB port is damaged. Try to reformat the USB stick as FAT 32 or FAT 16.

Run an HQIP test to test the port, or test with a few other USB flash disks.

diagnose hardware test usb

The following example shows when an external 500GB USB disk is inserted into the FortiGate USB port.Note that not all units and the FortiOS version supports high storage capacity (over 4GB).
