little addition: you may want to consider a FortiMail VM as SMTP-Proxy
or relays server. It is far more feature rich than a SOPHOS UTM/XG.
Beyond that Fortigate - as already said - only support Scanning of
passing through SMTP traffic with AV and Ant...
In addition to what Ede said it may be that you have to add a suffix to
the user-credentials - like some providers add a number like 0001 to the
username string. You might want to research that requirements.
