There are different ways a scan can be triggered:

Scheduled task to scan hosts (System > Scheduler)
"Scan On Connect" option enabled in Scan (Policy > Policy Configuration > Scans)
Passive Agent Rule (Policy > Passive Agent Configuration)
Manual initiation of scan (Hosts > Host View).
