Description This article describes how to resolve and establish a VPN connection: 'The VPN server may be unreachable. (-5053)'.
Scope All FortiClient.
Solution

While troubleshooting SSL VPN errors, there may be instances where the configuration on the FortiGate appears to be correct. However, a specific machine may still encounter errors and fail to establish a VPN connection. In such cases, the FortiClient VPN logs may display the following error:

Unable to establish the VPN connection. The VPN server may be unreachable. (-5053)

In these scenarios, the FortiGate SSL VPN debug logs typically do not provide much information, as the issue originates on the client side.

One of the common symptoms of this issue is that FortiClient completes the connection progress percentage unusually quickly, without pausing at any particular stage. The progress often reaches 89%, after which the connection abruptly terminates without displaying a specific error message.

If this behaviour is observed, a potential cause could be that the user profile folder on the affected machine is hidden.

For example, verify whether the folder is located at:

C:\Users\Bob

It is marked as hidden. If it is, unhide the folder along with all its contents, reboot the machine, and attempt to reconnect to the VPN.

If the error encountered is 'The VPN server may be unreachable.(-5052).'.

If the issue persists after performing the above steps, the problem likely resides within the FortiClient application. In such cases, and if a valid support contract is available, it is recommended to open a support ticket with the Technical Assistance Center (TAC).
