Description

This article describes the procedure of FortiGate VM virtual appliance fresh installation, designed for VMware platform, using FortiGate OVF file.

 

For these screenshots the Trial version of VMware Workstation 15 Player, version 15.5.7 has been used.

Solution

After to have registered product on the portal: https://support.fortinet.com/ and downloaded ‘FGT_VM64-v7.0.5-build0304-FORTINET.out.ovf’, it is possible to run VMware platform.

 

It is possible to create new Virtual Machine, but for this scenario OVF format will be used to provide a complete specification of the virtual machine, including the full list of required virtual disks and the required virtual hardware configuration.

The virtual hardware configuration includes CPU, memory, networking, and storage.

Then virtual machine installation procedure is followed.

Aftet to have imported FortiGate OVF file, it is possible to see virtual machine hardware specification.

It is now possible to run virtual machine.

From VM console, it requires from us to change default password.


By default, FortiGate VM has an administrator account set up with the username admin and no password.

So it is possible to access to FortiGate VM using GUI, by verifying which network port is used by IP address

Also, it is necessary to check which administrative services are allowed for port1.

Accessing to FortiGate VM GUI using port1 IP address, a warning message regarding the VM license is appearing.

The license file will be download from https://support.fortinet.com/.

Importing license file, FortiGate VM needs to reboot, so system can accept changes.

After reboot, FortiOS is good to go.
