Description | This article describes the process of determining the CPU operation temperature in the FortiGate. This method may apply to FortiGate running x86-based CPU like Intel or AMD CPU. It can be impossible to retrieve the exact temperature threshold for the ARM-based CPU since it is most likely to be part of the SoC – a Fortinet-proprietary processor. |
Scope | Physical FortiGate from mid to high-end. |
Solution |
First of all, it is necessary to get the CPU info on the FortiGate. It is possible to execute either of the following CLI commands:
For multi-VDOM setup, the command must be executed in the Global VDOM. It is also possible to look at the datasheet of the unit provided by either the local reseller or the SE representative at the organization for more information, especially before purchasing the unit.
For example, based on the input of the command running on a 2000E FortiGate:
The CPU that this firewall is using is an Intel Xeon E5-1650v3 (or revision 3). Secondly, to look up the info on the CPU temperature range, browse the official site of Intel for this CPU specification: Intel® Xeon® Processor E5-1650 v3.
Based on this screenshot, Tcase – the max temperature allowed at the CPU IHS is 66.70C. This is useful when desired to configure an alert on the SNMP server, for example, just in case the temperature runs too high on the CPU.
