Description

This article provides a step-by-step guide on how to gain console access to a Fortigate-7000 Chassis.

Scope

Any FortiGate-7000 chassis.

Solution

All FortiGate-7000 chassis models include a front panel management module (also called a shelf manager) on the chassis front panel.

The diagram below shows the management module front panel of the FortiGate 7060E.

For other models of the FortiGate 7000 Series, please refer to their respective System Guides here.

Use the management module console ports to connect to the management module CLI and to the CLI of the modules in chassis slots.

The default settings for connecting to each console port are: Baud Rate (bps) 9600, Data bits 8, Parity None, Stop bits 1, and Flow Control None.

The FIM and FPM modules use the standard FortiOS CLI while Shelf Management Controller (SMC) uses Serial Debug Interface (SDI).

Console Access from SMC is exclusive. If 1 console is accessing FPM/FIM, the other console cannot access it.

If connecting a PC to one of the management module console ports with a serial cable, open a terminal session by pressing Ctrl+T to enable console switching mode.

Press Ctrl+T multiple times to cycle through the FIM and FPM FortiOS CLIs (the new destination is displayed in the terminal window).

If Ctrl+T are pressed after connecting to the FPM in the highest slot number, the console disconnects. Press Ctrl+T again to start over again at slot 1.

Once the console port is connected to the desired CLI, press Enter to enable the CLI and login.

The default administrator account for accessing the FortiOS CLIs has the username 'admin' with no password.

When the session is complete, press Ctrl+T until the prompt shows a message disconnected from the console.

To switch to SMC console, press Ctrl+T until disconnected, then quickly press CTRL+R.

The default administrator account for the SMC SDI CLIs is admin/admin.
