Description

This article provides guidance on how to recover FortiExtender when stuck in the /etc_rw/passwd issue.

Scope Standalone FortiExtender.
Solution

When login to FortiExtender via console could see with below error when setting the new password for login.

 

FX201XXXXXXX login: admin
Password not created yet... setup password first to continue

Changing password for admin
New password:
Retype password:
passwd: can't create '/etc_rw/passwd+': File exists
passwd: can't update password file /etc_rw/passwd

FX201XXXXXXX login:

 

Follow the below steps to recover the FortiExtender.

 

  • Stop the FortiExtender in OS boot mode so can see as below.

[C]: Configure TFTP parameters.

[R]: Review TFTP parameters.

[T]: Initiate TFTP firmware transfer.

[F]: Format boot device.

[I]: System information.

[B]: Boot with backup firmware and set as default.

[Q]: Quit menu and continue to boot.

[H]: Display this list of options.

 

Enter C,R,T,F,I,B,Q,or H:  

 

  • Choose 'F' (Format device) and select the 'yes' option to format FortiExtender.

 

Enter C,R,T,F,I,B,Q,or H:  "F"

It will erase data in boot device. Continue? [yes/no]:yes

 

  • Once the FortiExtender is formatted, upgrade the FortiExtender to the latest code using TFTP parameters to recover the FortiExtender so that FortiExtender login can be successful without error (/etc_rw/passwd).

[C]: Configure TFTP parameters.
[T]: Initiate TFTP firmware transfer.
