Description This article explains a method of utilizing a template to perform a bulk import of network devices without provisioning any individual ports.
Scope FortiMonitor Control Panel, Network Devices
Solution

Bulk device import is a useful method for any user with a high number of connected network devices. As a typical network infrastructure includes a wide variety of device types (and often manufacturers), it is not generally advisable to query unwanted metrics from each individual port.  In order to perform a bulk import without unwanted port metrics, the first step is to create a template.

Create the "No Ports" Template

1)Select the "+Add" button in the upper right of the FortiMonitor control panel webpage.

2)When presented with the "Infrastructure and Resource Catalog", scroll down and select "Template" under the "Config" section.

3)From the presented options, select "Network Device" as the template type.  Provide an appropriate name and parent group (folder) to store the template.

4)Once the template is created, locate and select the "Port Scope", highlighted in the image below.

5)In the Port Scope modal that opens on the right side, select "By Name Filter" and add an alphanumeric string that is unlikely to be the configured name of any port across the network devices queued to be onboarded.  Save the configuration.

Perform Bulk Import of Network Devices

This step requires an existing OnSight Collector.

1)Select the "+Add" button in the upper right of the FortiMonitor control panel webpage.

2)Select the Network Device (advanced) option.

3)From the dropdown menu, select an appropriate OnSight Collector with appropriate access and a logical path to the network devices to be imported.

4)Select the "Bulk Entry" option in the upper right, as highlighted below.

5)Enter up to 50 IP or FQDN addresses, each on a new line.

6)Select and add the template created in the previous section.

7)Select an instance group (folder) for the newly discovered network devices to inhabit.

8)Select or create the SNMP credentials that will be used to access the above-entered network devices.  Select "Finish Discovery in background".  This will initiate the SNMP scan to discover and import the selected network devices.

Adding Ports After Import

There is no limit to the number of templates that may be applied to an instance.  The best method to introduce a limited set of ports is to create a new template (following the steps above) while changing the port filter rules to be applicable to the user's requirements.  This new template may then be applied to the individual network device instances, superseding the previous "No Ports" template and initiating a fresh scan against ports matching the new filter.  More details on template creation may be found here.
