Fortinet Connect Auth with MS AD with mail or upn?

Been trying to get are Fortinet Connect Box authenticating against the users mail or UPN attributes, both are the same value, in AD. Its working perfectly against the SamAccountName but are users access most applications with the email address.

We've got a MS Active Directory and the Mail/UPN are the same value of firstname.surname@domain. The SamAccountName is a different value.

Has anyone had to do this before?
