FortiGate 60D vs. 60E

Good morning @ all.

I'm currently thinking about buying a new firewall for a home office. At the Moment I'm looking at 2 different types of FortiGate devices. On the one hand 60E and on the other hand 60D. Why 60D? Because of the fanless design.

But now I'm really wondering about the different specs of both types. Normally I would assume that both devices have nearly the same specs but different harwdare design. But that's not the case. Is this really true?

Has someone experiences with the 60D? Or has anyone compared both devices?

Back to the fanless design. Both devices have nearly the same heat dissipation, but what about the accoustic noise running a 60E?

Thanks for assistance in advance.

Best regards,

Bernd

Bernd,
The performance upgrade you get with the FortiGate ‘E’ series models are insane. However you need to realize that the FGT-60E does not have an internal HDD. The FGT-61E does have a 128GB HDD, but comes with a slight price jump. Some things you lose without the HDD is log retention, some FortiView features, and some troubleshooting capabilities.

In regards to noise, the FGT-60E/61E run very quiet.

For a small home office, the FGT-60 series is a good choice, and if you are not concerned with the HDD issues I would recommend the 60E.
If the HDD is a concern, then the options are the 60D or 61E, it just depends on your budget.

If you decide to go with the 60/61E model, you need to make sure to upgrade to FortiOS 5.4.4, as the previous versions did have a memory issue that cause the units to go into conserve mode and take the networks down. However, the 5.4.4 OS has resolved this issue.

I would like to emphasize, that FortiGate and FortiWifi 60/61E are passive devices (no fan), so there is no noise.

And in most cases for home office/ small office use, using FortiCloud (1 week free retention) and setting logging to real time is enough.
