what is the default spanning tree mode on fortiswitch out of the box. can someone please confirm?

To confirm the default setting, you can access the FortiSwitch CLI and use the following command to display the current Spanning Tree configuration: #show switch-controller stp-settings
If you are directly connected to the FortiSwitch: #show spanning-tree

The default spanning tree is MSTP which is backward-compatible with STP and Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol (RSTP). You can read more in the admin guide
In later version is also added support for per-VLAN STP.
The command to check the config and the ports in the switch: # diagnose stp instance list
