SNMP Community String Configuration

I' ve got a couple of Fortigate 50b running 4.0 MR2 Patch 4. I' m trying to setup an SNMP community but I don' t see an option to configure a community string for authentication. I have looked through the CLI guide and it does not appear there is an option to do this. I do see the option to create a user with authentication. I was also looking at older CLI command guides and noticed that older firmware had this option to set a community string. Was this option removed from newer firmware or is the " user authentication" taking the place of this option?

It' s here in the GUI: System > Config > SNMP v1/v2c Check ' SNMP Agent: Enable' Then, create a new community (Create New) and specify the options and/or protocols permitted. The admin ' SNMP' option has to be enable on the interface setup for the interface you are connecting to.

I should clarify: I can add the community without an issue. In the GUI there is no option to use a " community string" for authentication purposes. I can select which protocol (v1 or v2c) to use and the port to connect on but the SNMP manager I am trying to connect to is setup to use a Community string for authentication. I don' t see an option to add this string to my Community anywhere. I thought maybe it had to be done in the CLI but I don' t see the option there either.

IMHO in SNMP, the community IS the password to access a networked ressource. Maybe you try to use SNMP v3 which uses user authentication?

I will try using the Community String as the Community Name and see if that resolves this issue. Thanks for the tip. I' ll let you know if that works.
