There are benefits of using GUI for some configuration tasks. However some are better, or even exclusively doable, via CLI only. By CLI I mean typing commands into console like interface.
For CLI configuration you do have basically two options:
- access via GUI console integrated into FortiOS
- use actual console or SSH connection (telnet is by default disabled and not recommended)
How to use above mentioned each of access options is IMHO quite well documented in Admin Guide \ Getting Started section, direct link here https://docs.fortinet.com/document/fortigate/7.4.1/administration-guide/954635/getting-started
Personally, for simple one-time jigs I do not hesitate to use GUI console.
But for all the deeper troubleshooting I do use SSH (mainly for logging to file and speed).

If you're using a console connection, make sure your baud rate is correct.
If trying to SSH, you can try a different SSH client maybe. Windows has it built into CMD nowadays, might be worth a shot.

Hi @AUT_Maverick,
Did you try SSH or GUI?

Hi @AUT_Maverick,
Please make sure you do it after a reboot when prompted "'Press any key to display configuration menu".
Regards,
