Description

This article describes the key points of backup.
It is recommended to back up all data on the FortiMail so that in the event of an outage, this data can be recovered.

The FortiMail Administration Guide provides a full description of backup and restore functions.

Solution

To ensure that all critical data is backed up and secure, all of the following should be backed up regularly.

Mail Data Backups.

The System -> Maintenance -> Mail Data tab allows the backup and restoration of all mail data, including system quarantine, email users’ quarantines, user preferences, archived email, and server-mode webmail mailboxes. It also provides a monitor of the status of any backup or restoration that is currently in progress.

It is recommended that a full backup be done at weekly intervals, with incremental backups being done every weekday.

System Configuration Backups.

In  System -> Maintenance -> Configuration -> Backup Configuration, there is an option to back up User configuration and IBE data, along with the configuration.

If the configuration is changed regularly, it is highly recommended to schedule backups of the configuration to a remote FTP/SFTP server under
System -> Maintenance -> Configuration -> Backup Configuration -> Scheduled Backup -> Remote backup.

Log Backup.

To back up the logs, go to Log and Report -> Log Settings -> Remote Log Setting, and configure the logs to be sent to a remote server.

Under Logging Policy Configuration, for Gateway and Transparent mode, it is not necessary to select:
  • POP3 server event.
  • IMAP server event.

All other options should be selected.

However, for devices in server mode, all options should be selected in this section.

In all cases select:
  • AntiVirus Log.
  • AntiSpam Log.
  • History Log.

If IBE/Secure Mail is being used then 'Encryption Log' should be enabled.
