Description This article describes why the FortiWLC and the FortiAP firmware versions do not match the new v8.6-7 release and the steps to upgrade the FortiAP firmware to match it with the FortiWLC firmware.
Scope FortiWLC-500D; FortiAP-U433F; v8.6-7.
Solution
  1. Although 'Automatic AP Upgrade' is enabled on the FortiWLC, the FortiAPs running on v8.6-6 firmware would show 'Enabled/Online' on the FortiWLC that is on the new v8.6-7 firmware as shown below:

8.6.6 image.PNG

  1. This is the expected behavior on the new FortiWLC v8.6-7 version because v8.6-7 was released as a minor upgrade to v8.6-6, and due to that, 'Automatic AP Upgrade' will not upgrade the FortiAP from v8.6-6 to v8.6-7 version and FortiAPs running on v8.6.6 will be up and functional on FortiWLC v8.6.7, showing up as Enabled/Online.

  2. To match FortiAP firmware with FortiWLC, manually upgrade FortiAPs to the v8.6-7 version using the following command:

upgrade ap same <ID> or <AP ID range>

For example:

upgrade ap same 2619
upgrade ap same 2619-2620

Here 2619 is the AP ID. To get the AP ID, execute the 'show ap' command on the FortiWLC CLI.
