How to trouble shoot a faulty power supply?

Scope

RELATED PRODUCTS: All Controllers, All SA

RELATED SOFTWARE VERSIONS: NA

KEYWORDS: Amber Light, Power Supply, Faulty Power Supply

Solution
When a controller or software appliance is showing an external health LED amber light, it means that there is a problem with the power to the unit, a sub system or a component.

NOTE: Some controllers may not have a redundancy power system and may have only one power supply.

To troubleshoot a system power failure, perform the following steps:

  • Check if power supplies are connected.
  • Check for Green LED on the power supply (Green light on, power supply good).
  • Check for a continuous system beep. (if heard, no power to one of the power supplies or bad power supply)
  • Swap power supply with known good power supply or swap power supply into the other slot.

Possible System Power Resolutions:

  • If the power supply’s AC power cord is disconnected, connect it.
  • If power supply is connected and no Green LED light is showing on the power supply, try connecting into another outlet.
  • If the non-lit Green LED follows the power supply when swapping it into the other slot or a known good power supply works, change the bad power supply.
  • If the Green LED stays on the power supply slot when swapping with a known good power supply, problem may not be with the power supply but with an internal sub system or a component.
