once you have set up a running config on your FGT you are recommended to follow the official upgrade path. Otherwise you may loose parts of your config or get courrupted. Bubu listed the offical upgrade path in his posting.
If your FGT is still on factory default you don't need to care for upgrade paths because its factory default and you could then still do annother reset to factory after upgrade.
