Are you asked to enter your credentials when you ssh the server?
Can you login via ssh with other existing admins?
Have you enable ssh access at interface level? (interface settings)
yes it ask for creds - i believe username is root
tried same login as gui does not work .
The root account in CLI is not useable on latest versions that run on FNAC-OS (7.2, 7.4, 7.6). On CLI, the admin account is built in but other accounts can also be created, you can find more information here.
The CLI credentials and application credentials used in GUI access, have been and are still different. During initial configuration there is a checkbox to use same credentials for ease of use (default selected) but it's not always used:
Try to access with admin rather than root.
I know that the admin user should be able to access via SSH, while I'm not sure root can do anymore since FortiNAC-F (unlike the legacy FortiNAC).
