YouTube Problems

I am trying to exempt specific videos in you tube. I have created a URL filter and put the whole URL in. It gets to the page and it looks like the video will start but when I click play the video throws up " An error occurred. Please try again later." . I have tried just putting the video part of the URL into the filter and get the same result. If I disable the Web Filter in the policy section it works fine (but obviously nothing is filtered). Going through the logs it looks like the video content is blocked under the streaming media catagory but I can;t seem to find a way around this. I' m sure I have done this in the past so I' m not sure if something has changed. We are running 4.3.11. Any help would be great.

What string pattern did you use to create the URL filter? Internally, Youtube streams the videos from similar domain youtube sites (e.g. dsdfsdfsdf.youtube.com).

Hi Dave, I have added just the youtube video reference ie AF12UGIU (this is made up) and it lets me onto the page, but no other youtube pages. however when i press play it throws up an error.

The " AF12UGIU" part may change from one connection to another. You have to check which URL is blocked, either from the " Log and Archive Statistics" widge or from the Web Filter log in " Log&Report" . You may need to unblock more than just one url to get one video properly working. Because youtube uses different local or cached servers to steam videos to you, it may be next to impossible to completely unblock certain videos. FortiOS 5.0 suppose to have some nice UTM features when it comes to blocking/unblock certain youtube videos though. Assuming once they worked out most of the bugs in that release -- may be it may be something you want consider upgrading the Fortigate to. (Personally, I' m sticking to 4.0MR3 for now.) Personally, it may be easier to just create a local user/group on the Fortigate and set up a web filter override on youtube (Streaming Media and Download) -- just give out the user/pw to those people that need access to youtube.

Hi Dave, Thats the problem - I only want to allow access to one video or a group of approved videos. I' m sure I had done this before for a school during a demo using just the viedo part of the URL. You are right when I look through the logs I see the embeded vieo pulling through a new url which looks like it is blocked under media & streaming. I have logged a support case with Fortinet as they have advised this should work, I suspect they will say this is a feature that works in v5.
