UAC prompt when starting FortiClient VPN after update to version 7.0.7.0345

We recently updated to FortiClient VPN version 7.0.7.0345 for Windows. When users now start FortiClient VPN on their Windows machines, they get a User Account Control prompt MicrosoftTeams-image (8).jpg

Can anyone advise what has been changed in version 7.0.7.0345 that cause this UAC prompt to come up? And what we can do to, except lower the UAC settings, to prevent this prompt from happening?

Hello TVB!

 

The UAC pop-up may also appear if FortiClient was previously installed using a non-administrator privileged account. 

 

Since the upgrade process requires admin privileges to make changes to the registry keys, make sure that Intune has admin privilege during FortiClient installation/upgradation. Alternatively you can attempt to run the FortiClient installer manually on the device as admin and verify if UAC appears.

 

It is either something to do with Intune account type or the previous user account used to install FortiClient which does not have similar privileges as the current admin account.

I have got an answer from one of our engineers.

 

Before to help you, we need more information about your set up:

- Is this a free FortiClient VPN or licensed FortiClient? 

- What was the previous version before he upgraded the FortiClient to 7.0.7?

- How was the upgrade deployed? SCCM, InTunes?

- What account type was used when running the installer?

 

I would strongly suggest raising a support ticket if it is a licensed FortiClient so that we can troubleshoot further on this.

 

The UAC restrictions were there since version 6.2. Please, can you verify that the admin account type used for FortiClient deployment/upgrade has administration privileges as it involves creating registry keys in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE?

+ We use the free version of FortiClient VPN.

+ We used several versions before, but all were before version 6.2

 

- How was the upgrade deployed? SCCM, InTunes?

+ Microsoft Intune

 

- What account type was used when running the installer?

+ Local administrator

 

Every user is local administrator on their device and that is the same account that Intune uses to install apps like FortClient VPN. Local administrators have privileges like creating registry keys.
