Hi
There is an upgrade path tool inside support.fortinet.com
the upgrade path to latest 5.4 is
VersionBuild Number
5.2.9 0736
5.4.4 1117
5.4.6 1165
5.4.8 1183
I do not recomend to go to to 5.6 because you may encounter performance issues.
if you still want 5.6 the path is
VersionBuild Number
5.2.9 0736
5.4.4 1117
5.6.2 1486
5.6.3 1547
Apart from above and if this device is production (and critical) more upgrade paths if it is clustered may take longer but ensure success of upgrade.

If all else fails, use the force !
hi,
and welcome to the forums.
The answer to your question can be found in a recent post here: https://forum.fortinet.com/tm.aspx?m=159948. Look for the post from Toshi.
The upgrade path information has recently been moved from the Cookbook site to the support site (where you need a valid contract to log in). Unfortunately, the information now is incomplete as it does not reach back far enough. You can only download the Release Notes (from the folder which contains the firmware images) and check from which version it can be upgraded. Then, get the next older version and so on.
If you are looking for this kind of information you could use the search function in the forums, for instance, search for "upgrade path".
BTW, the title of your post is misleading - you have v5.2.4, not v5.4.2. Never mind.
It's not only you having this trouble, these request have come in increasingly during the last weeks. Completely unnecessary effort as the info had been accessible before.
FORTINET should restore the available information as it was before! Please support your customers!
Hi,
Thanks for your feedback regarding the upgrade paths. The older paths are again available in the Cookbook at http://cookbook.fortinet.com/sysadmins-notebook/supported-upgrade-paths-fortios/
For customers with current support contracts, upgrade paths from 5.2.9 can be found under "Upgrade Path" at https://support.fortinet.com/Download/FirmwareImages.aspx
Regards,
Admin.
