This is an update to an old post, but to watch Netflix streaming content behind a Fortigate FortiOS 6.2 (possibly earlier) the Fortigate Inspection Mode to be in FLOW mode (Policy & Objects, IPV4) rather than proxy.  Curiously some services e.g mobile and browser will work in proxy mode, but others e.g. Netflix apps on Roku Player, Sky Q box, ... will not work.  The symptom is that the content appears to be loading (spinning wheel) and at 24% (in my case) an error pops up "We're having trouble playing this title right now. Please try again later or select a different title."    Setting my Fortigate back to Flow solved the problem.

Hello Fortinet Community,

It sounds like the issue may be related to some URLs that the web filter hasn't accounted for yet. Netflix uses multiple domains and streaming servers, so it's possible that not all of them are included in your filter's whitelist. I would suggest checking Netflix's official list of necessary domains or trying to temporarily disable the filter for a specific session to test it. If you're still having trouble, an alternative you might want to explore is Magis TV for PC, which offers a variety of content and might work better with your current setup.

Best of Luck!!

Could you provide more details about the current web filtering system you are using (e.g., brand, version, specific configuration)? Have you ensured that all necessary Netflix domains and subdomains are whitelisted, including those related to media streaming and content delivery networks (CDNs)? Additionally, are there any specific error codes or messages Netflix displays when you attempt to play a movie? It might also help to know if the issue occurs across all devices or just specific ones (e.g., mobile, desktop), and if there are any SSL inspection or decryption rules in place that might be interfering with Netflix's encrypted traffic

It seems like you're experiencing issues because Netflix uses a variety of domains and CDNs (Content Delivery Networks) for streaming. While you've already added some domains to your filter, there might still be others that are essential. Here's a checklist to help you troubleshoot:

  1. Add Additional Netflix Domains:
Ensure you've added all necessary Netflix-related domains. Apart from the ones you mentioned, try including:

    • *.nflxvideo.net
    • *.akamaihd.net
    • *.netflix.net
Sometimes, updates to Netflix's infrastructure introduce new domains that aren't immediately documented.
  2. Switch to Flow Mode:
If you're using a FortiGate device, as suggested by another user, switching from Proxy Mode to Flow Mode can help. This setting allows traffic to flow more directly, avoiding potential issues with content decryption.

  3. Check SSL/HTTPS Inspection Settings:
Netflix streams are encrypted, so if SSL inspection is enabled, it might disrupt playback. Temporarily disabling SSL inspection for Netflix-related traffic could resolve the issue.

  4. Test on Different Devices:
Verify if the problem occurs across multiple devices or is limited to specific platforms. This can help identify whether the issue is with the web filter settings or the device configuration.

Lastly, if you're open to alternatives or looking for a more seamless experience, you might explore platforms like MagisTV, which offers a wide range of content and may not face similar compatibility issues with web filters.
