Hi,
It is this article that we follow to reset the password,
but if the maintainer is not working then there is no other option then to format the flash and reload the Image using a tftp server
Is there an easier way?
Hello @kepler22b
As Salem said, if the maintainer is not working (or is disabled) then there is no other option then to format the flash and reload the Image using a tftp server.
Keep in mind that you need to log in to with the maintainer user in 60 sec once the FGT is booted.

As long as you FortiGate does have a reset button you can factory reset it with it:
just unplug powerchord. Press AND hold the button while powering the FGT back on.
Plus you always have the option to format flash and reload the image via tfp. This however requires a valid firmware image, serial console access and a tftp server.
