Is there an update available for FortiAP

Hello,

I am trying to determine if there is an firmware/OSVersion update available for one of our FortiAPs (FAP423E)

[ul]
  • It is attached to a FortiGate FGT81E on v5.4.8,build6501
  • Logged in to the FortiGate, under WiFi & Switch Controller > Managed FortiAPs I see the current OSVersion as: FP423E-v5.4-build6037
  • Yesterday when I right click > Upgrade Firmware it was saying Failed to retrieve FortiAP recommended firmware updates. Today it just takes me to the Upgrade Firmware screen with Upgrade File with +Upload button
  • Supported Upgrade Paths – FortiAP and FortiAP-S doesn't show anything matching build6501 and search shows No matching records found
  • Similarly, SYSADMIN_NOTES search doesn't bring up anything[/ul]

How can I find out if there is an update for our FAP423E in the 5.4xx stream (we are not currently looking at doing a point or major upgrade, just ensuring it is fully patched in the 5.4xx stream).

Any help would be much appreciated!

It's under "FortiAP-W2" for Wave 2 devices. I had the same problem looking for 221E.

BTW, the fully patched v5.4.x version is v5.4.9 (released May 10, 2018). Do yourself a favor and get rid of the annoying GUI bug in the Policy Table (always expanding fully, fixed in v5.4.9).

    There is a slight misunderstanding:

my remark regarding the latest patch refers to the FGT. For FAP-W2, v5.4.5 is the latest patch.

I was not able to determine the release version (v5.4.x) from the branch point (6037) you mention. Sometimes, for some models the firmware is released from a branch of the main firmware, for instance to support brand new hardware. Later, this branch point release is merged with the regular release.

In your case, I wouldn't bother too much. Upgrade to v5.4.5 from what you have. Worst case is you lose the config but the config is reloaded anyway from the FGT WLC. Second worst, you already have the latest release installed and waste a reboot.

And no, there is no Recommended Upgrade Path tool for the Wave 2 models, not yet. You will have to read the Release Notes (which you would have done anyway, right?).

It's simply because only 5.4.3, 5.4.4, 5.4,5 folders are under 5.0 folder. That's why we cab tell 5.4.5 is the latest.

Thanks very much Toshi and edu_pfau!  :)

OK, so based on the above it seems our goal is to update our FAP423E to FortiAP-W2 v5.4.9.  A couple of questions:

    [ol]
  • Is there a page like Supported Upgrade Paths – FortiAP and FortiAP-S for FortiAP-W2? I've done some searching under FortiAP-W2 but unfortunately still not seeing what upgrade path I need to take.
  • What subpoint is our FAP423E currently on? Under WiFi & Switch Controller > Managed FortiAPs I see the current version is FP423E-v5.4-build6037 but the subpoint (5.4.x) is curiously absent.[/ol]

    Thanks again!

Thanks again edu_pfau! All of that makes sense!

BTW, how were you able to determine that v5.4.5 is the latest patch for FAP-W2 in the 5.4 series? I can't find a dedicated page for FortiAP-W2 so the only method I could find was to Google FortiAP-W2 and manually eyeball the highest 5.4x Release Notes from the list of results.

P.S. - Yes, I have been made aware of the importance of reading Release Notes.

Thank you both, very, very much!
