I had issue resetting FortiGate 81E v6.0.14 password

Hi, I had forgotten my password and attempt to reset my fortigate firewall 81E v6.9.14. After hard reboot, i login as maintainer and password as bcpb(serialno). However from the putty cli, whatever i type are all garbage letters and told me login incorrect. Anything wrong with what i had done?

Hello

Garbage letters may mean that on of the following:

  • Check your serial connection is: Baud Rate 9600, Data bits 8, Parity None, Stop bits 1, and Flow Control None
  • Serial cable might be defective, try change it
  • Try from another PC
  • You or someone may have changed the console parameters on FGT. If so, try initiate serial connection with the right parameters

Hi @eliteseal,

I believe you are not able to login as maintainer? Are you using a console cable to connect? Please refer to https://community.fortinet.com/t5/FortiGate/Technical-Tip-Resetting-a-lost-admin-password/ta-p/19704...

After you logged in as maintainer, only commands you are allowed to run:

config system admin

edit admin

set password <newpassword>

end
