Our experience with FortiGate units is limited mostly to 60D and 100D units. We have a home user that could use a firewall and 2 or 3 wireless access points. How would a 30D or a 50E perform in this situation? The user would typically only have 4 users connected at a time. They do have a very fast 1 Gbs internet connection though. Would this small a firewall hamper the internet connection speed? Ideas / Suggestions? Thanks.

The 60D I put in was for a 150Mbps connection so that is a fair argument but it is running like a top. I guess my point is, I don't feel like they would notice the difference because it isn't always going to be limiting traffic. Again I'll defer to your experience with Untangle, I just don't have positive experiences with OpenSource products. I've been selling, installing, supporting, and now managing for my current employer FGs since 2004 and have never had problems with them (with the exception of me being a bit too upgrade happy early on), but you learn from that experience quickly.
Sounds like a Intel NUC and Untangle could be an interesting solution.

But 50E seems to be a good performing FW and not everyone has problems with the unit.
No, a 60D won't work.. Please note - he has a 1Gbe connection. For full UTM he will need a 300D to use the full UTM package to get 1Gbe throughput.
60D's are very low end, slow units with limited ASIC processing power.
