Getting a bogus expired message from the VPN only CLI Forticlient 7.0.7 on Ubuntu 18, 20

After downloading a VPN only deb file forticlient_vpn_7.0.7.0246_amd64.deb manually from

https://www.fortinet.com/support/product-downloads#vpn with a fresh install I am trying to run fortivpn CLI, I get:

$ /opt/forticlient/fortivpn
FortiClient SSLVPN is unavailable: FortiClient VPN trial has expired.
Please contact your administrator or connect to EMS for license activation.

(Basically, the same as with the full client from the Fortinet repo.)

This VPN-only isn't supposed to be the EMS thing, is it? Or a wrong binary is provided by accident?

What I am understanding is wrong?

This behaved identically on Ubuntu 20.04 and 18.04.

All I am looking for a working MFA-enabled non-EMS FortiClient 7.0.7, ideally CLI, to run cleanly and properly on Linux.

I encountered the same issue after installing FortiClient from the repository https://repo.fortinet.com/repo/7.0/debian/ and running "/opt/forticlient/fortivpn" or "forticlient vpn edit". And running "/opt/forticlient/vpn" resulted in no output at all.

This fixed it for me:

1. Download and install the “FortiClient VPN” package from https://www.fortinet.com/support/product-downloads (direct URL: https://filestore.fortinet.com/forticlient/forticlient_vpn_7.0.7.0246_amd64.deb)
2. Install the package: dpkg -i forticlient_vpn_7.0.7.0246_amd64.deb

3. Install any missing dependencies: apt-get install -f

4. Run "/opt/forticlient/vpn" (instead of /opt/forticlient/fortivpn)

I'm facing the same problem. Following @i-Force's instructions didn't help (vpn couldn't be established because routing table couldn't be modified - this happened both as user and as root).

Any hint?
