Fortinet 40F

Looking for a very low cost solution for a basic lab. I'm being asked to create a second network that is separate from my main network... doing so on a budget.

I'm not very familiar with Fortinet but see one sitting on a shelf in a storage room (I think it is a 40), do i need to license it to use it? I know most license/support models are to be able to call for support, code upgrades, and dynamic signature updates. Would i need to buy support to use this for basic firewall policy and routing? Or would a basic Forti allow me to begin the setup, do some research, then buy the right stuff later?

As mentioned this is very budget sensitive and want to know if i'm wasting my time digging this out and finding the right power supply to play with this .

If this proves to be useful for this basic setup then I will do some research and lab work then recommend buying the right thing or licensing this one (if it is not too old).

Hi @huser,

Without a license, you can't upgrade the firmware or use FortiGuard based filtering. However, basic firewall policies and routing should work fine.

Hello,

We do recommend having license, but for testing purposes you can proceed without license.
