FortiClient interfering with network communications

It seems the FortiClient does a bit more than act as just a VPN client, even if no additional features are installed. Whenever FortiClient, there are times when certain programs (such as Visual Studio web development server) don' t function correctly. Sometimes FortiClient keeps ports open which should not be open preventing other programs from using them. Othertimes, the FortiClient prevent programs from working at all. For example, no media streaming protocol based on Shoutcast will work when FortiClient is running on the machine. What is causing this network interferences. Is it possible to still use FortiClient for a VPN client *only* without having it interfere with network communications and act as a proxy for, seemingly, *all* traffic?

Could you disable FortiProxy to see if those interferences still happen? If you on Windows 7, run as Administrator to open up the FortiClient GUI console and then: General -> Help & Support -> Diagnostics Uncheck ' Enable FortiProxy' and OK. Double check that the FortiProxy is disabled before doing your test and let me know if it solves your problem. FortiClient 4.3 has much better design and you will less likely run into those issues if you only use the VPN features. L.C

I am running FortiClient 4.1.3 but there is no Diagnostics options under General -> Help & Support. I only see the following: Documentation --About FortiClient --FortiClient User Guide --FortiCare Knowledge Center Customer Support --Contact Fortinet Inc. Customer Support --Technical Discussion Forums There is no option to run as administrator when I right click the FortiClient icon in the system tray anymore so I *believe* it is already in that mode. Anything else I can do?

Yes, upgrade. The feature to disable the proxy was introduced only recently. Check the Release Notes.

The feature was introduced in FortiClient 4.2.2. The latest version is 4.2.5. The build you are using is ancient. If you cannot upgrade at the moment, see the KB article on how to disable FortiProxy: http://kb.fortinet.com/kb/microsites/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=FD32924&sliceId=1&docTypeID=DT_KCARTICLE_1_1&dialogID=23547191&stateId=0%200%2023545392 L.C
