I can't find anything in any version of the CLI reference books that tells me what this is. If you're configuring something in CLI, and you type "set ?" to find out what settings are available for use, some of them have an "*" beside them such as "*ipv4-start-ip" when configuring IPsec vpn. I thought at first that it indicated a value that was already specified, but that doesn't seem to be true since some of the values that are set don't have this asterisk.
What does the * mean in this case?

I'm told by a fortinet tech that this means the item is required in the configuration.
Yes, a mandatory value. Without it, you will not be able to "end" without an error.
