Ask - Deep review of FG90D and 100E
hi there,
need advice here.
We plan to buy new fortigate, but confuse between 90D and 100E. anyone have deep review for these models?
What we need is:
- configure some ports as interface, and some ports as switch mode.
- build and connect VPN IPSEC tunnel up to 15.
- build VPN ssl up to 10 users.
is the fortigate can use fortiddns dedicated for each WAN?
is it possible to add another WAN?
thank you.

Dear friend ,
just check the price different and 100 E is new series from fortinet i so will suggest go for the 100E because may be in future if you grow or company size increase it should not affect the performance of the firewall.
you are comparing wrong device you should check for 90D and 90E.
best regards

Hi there!
Both devices apply for:
- configure some ports as interface, and some ports as switch mode.
- build and connect VPN IPSEC tunnel up to 15.
- build VPN ssl up to 10 users.
is it possible to add another WAN? Yes, you can use any port for wan traffic.
is the fortigate can use fortiddns dedicated for each WAN? Yes, both can do this, even if the dynamic DNS is not from fortinet, like dyndns.
I think there's a big difference between both devices, because the 90D is more like small office and the 100E suits better for a next generation firewall use (more utm and more sessions per second)
Here's both datasheet:
90D:
https://www.fortinet.com/content/dam/fortinet/assets/data-sheets/FortiGate_FortiWiFi_90D_Series.pdf
100E:
https://www.fortinet.com/content/dam/fortinet/assets/data-sheets/FortiGate_100E_Series.pdf
The fortigate 100E duplicates throughput (7.4 gbps against 3.5 gbps) but has a dramatic improve in utm:
360Mbps against 25. or IPS 500Mbps against 41.
Price:
http://www.avfirewalls.com/FortiGate-90D.asp $780.00 (Without license i think)
http://www.avfirewalls.com/FortiGate-100E.asp $1,610.00
In my opinion, if I could and i can afford it, i would buy the 100E.
hope it help

Hi Lescudero,
thank you for your reply.
for price double than 90E, is it worth-ed then?
as far as I know, more advance the models, license and annual fee will increase too.
so I need to really considering about this.
thanks in advance.

in my experience with a 80C (a smaller model than 90D) with 200 users, 100 Ipsec VPN, 5 users with VPN SSL and some UTM features (web filter, app ctrl and av with tuning) works well (not perfect), so if the price is something critic, I think you should buy the the 90D.
But, probably you can't grow much longer with this device....

90D is a horrible device with low throughput. Don't buy it.. Even the 60E is way better than the 90D.
60E has 2 WAN connections.

I would say you should consider also the 100D
- OK, older (D) generation
- D is a little cheaper than E
- rock solid device running at many many customer sites
- OS 5.2 support if pure stability is a key factor
Of course you can go for the latest generation but in this case 90D will not satisfy your expectation.
90E is available so compare 90D to 100D and / or 90E to 100E.

Good morning,
the 100E price might double compared to the 90D, but it more then doubles in power.
As stated by the other posters, the throughput, sessions etc etc, all rise tremendously.
To compare them, look at the product matrix, and I'm sure you'll be convinced.
https://www.fortinet.com/content/dam/fortinet/assets/data-sheets/Fortinet_Product_Matrix.pdf
To me the choice is obvious, end user list price of the two modules with 5 year UTM 8x5 support fortiguard&forticare is;
90D : 3.844
100E : 6.697
hope this helps, good luck!
edit : price is in euro's ;)

Please consider functionalities. Entry level models (two-digits) have some limitations. For example you can configure aggregate or redundant interfaces in 100*, but cannot do it with 90*.
Go to docs.fortinet.com and search for feature/platform matrix
