40F running 7.2 while using 831F running 7.6 - recommended ?

Hi,

I have 40F, I understand that the recommended version to use is the latest 7.2 - let me know if I'm wrong.

We have 7 units of 831F.

I understand that it is recommended to work with the same version on the firewall and the APs.

yet - I see that I miss new features that exist on version 7.6 such as 802.11mc (Wi-Fi RTT) Support.

would it even be possible to use the new features while using old version over the 40F ?
what happens if I use newer version over the APs ?

Hi @shlomim ,

A FortiGate 40F running the long-term-support train FortiOS 7.2 can still adopt and pass basic WLAN traffic for an FAP-831F, but any new Wi-Fi features added in 7.6—such as 802.11 mc (Wi-Fi RTT)—require that both the FortiGate controller and the FortiAP run the same 7.6 firmware family. Fortinet’s own release notes confirm that, which referenced in the document shared below, the 40F is a fully supported model in FortiOS 7.6, and the FortiAP 7.6.x software is officially integrated only with FortiOS 7.6.x and later; other version mixes are “best-effort” and TAC will ask you to align them before it investigates feature issues. Therefore, if you need those 7.6-only wireless capabilities, upgrade the 40F to 7.6 (following the published upgrade path) and keep the AP firmware on the same major release; otherwise, stay on 7.2 across the board for maximum stability.

NOTE:  The content mentioned in the document is as follows: We recommend that the FortiAP firmware version be matched with the respective FortiOS version, when available. Other variations of FortiOS and FortiAP versions may technically work for the lowest common feature set. However, if problems arise, Fortinet Support will ask that the versions be matched, as recommended, before troubleshooting.
