why do we assign secondary IP address

Hi All,

I am little bit confused, why do we have to assign secondary IP address on the interface and what is the use of secondary IP address.

Regards,

Umesh

Hi Umesh

If you would like to have multiple IP address on the interface, you can make use of secondary IP addresses. This helps in configuring multiple subnets on the same interface.

Thank you.

Usually it is a temporary state, when for example switching topology , say from LAN 10.10.10.0/24 to 192.168.15.0/24 and you want to minimize downtime. Configuring new network on the FGT interface to LAN you can switch lans and both networks will work without changing something in the fortigate.

Essentially, a secondary IP address is a way to assign more than one IP address to a single network interface. So why would you want to do this? There are a few reasons. For example, you might have multiple subnets that you want to connect to using the same physical interface. As for the Router IP Net, you can think of it as the network that your router is connected to. In this case, if your router's private IP address is 192.168.1.1, then the Router IP would be 192.168.1.0/24. Or, you might want to run multiple services that each require their own IP address.
