Description This article describes the most widely used PoE standards, each of which supports different power capacities.
Scope FortiSwitch
Solution

The attached table represents the most widely used PoE standard. Each subsequent newer version of the standard doubles the maximum power of the previous one, while still being backward compatible.

Property PoE PoE+ UPoE
Maximum power on the port 15.4W 30 W 60 W
Power on PD 12.95 W 25.50 W 51 W
IEEE standard 802.3af 802.3 at 802.3bt type 3
Minimum cable type Cat.3 Cat. 5 Cat. 5

Note:

The total amount of power delivered by a switch cannot exceed its budget.

Important:

Some of the power delivered to PDs is dissipated on the cable. For this reason, a minimum guaranteed power on the PD, when the port delivers the maximum power, is also indicated.

The FortiSwitch secure access and rugged series support PoE and PoE+, with some models supporting UPoE. The datasheet for each  FortiSwitch indicates its PoE-capable ports and its PoE power budget.  The PoE power budget information is also available on the Faceplates tab within the FortiSwitch Ports page.
