Description

This article describes how to configure FortiSwitch PoE port when there are IP Phones with Expansion Modules.

Scope

FortiOS 6.4 to 7.4 FortiSwitch managed by FortiGate or Standalone Switch.

Solution

There are some situations when it is necessary to use IP Phones from any other brand and sometimes the Phone includes Expansion Modules as soon as the Expansion Module is connnected to the Phone and the Phone to the PoE Switch port this Expansion Module does not turn on.

For Example, some Cisco IP Phones with Expansion Modules do not turn on with a normal Switch port configuration, as soon as the correct lldp profile is configured and is assigned to the Forti Switch port the module is turned on and connected to the IP Phone.

Configuring LLDP profiles

  1. Read the PoE budget requirements from the IP Phone. Maybe it requires PoE 802.3af or 803.3at. Check also the FortiSwitch PoE budget requirements for the IP phone is the proper election.
  2. If the FortiSwitch is validated to be able to provide enough power budget to the IP Phone and it still is not turned on, it is necessary to apply a special lldp profile to activate the Expansion Module like this example:

Create the LLDP profile:

S224EPTF18-----1 # config switch lldp profile
S224EPTF18-----1 (profile) # edit PhonesExpansion
new entry 'PhonesExpansion' added
S224EPTF18-----1 (PhonesExpansion) # set 802.3-tlvs
eee-config Efficient energy enthernet config.
max-frame-size Maximum frame size TLV.
power-negotiation PoE+ classification TLV.
S224EPTF18-----11 (PhonesExpansion) # set 802.3-tlvs power-negotiation
S224EPTF18-----1(PhonesExpansion) # end

Assign the LLDP profile to the Switch port:

S224EPTF18-----1 # config switch physical-port
S224EPTF18-----1 (physical-port) # edit port13
SS224EPTF18-----1 (port13) # set lldp-profile PhonesExpansion
S224EPTF18-----1 (port13) # next
S224EPTF18-----1 (physical-port) # edit port13
S224EPTF18-----1(port13) # show full-configuration

config switch physical-port
    edit "port13"
        set cdp-status disable
        set description ''
        set dmi-status global
        set energy-efficient-ethernet disable
        set flapguard disabled
        set flow-control disable
        set fortilink-p2p disable
        set l2-learning enabled
        set lldp-profile "PhonesExpansion"
        set lldp-status tx-rx
        set loopback disable
        set max-frame-size 9216
        set speed auto
        set status up
        set storm-control-mode global
    next
end

S224EPTF18-----1 (port13) #

Now, it is possible to use the IP Phone with the Expansion Module.
